Multi Rating

Your Private Pilot's Licence restricts you initially to single engined aircraft, but with 70 hours of flying pilot in command you can progress onto a multi engine class. At Southend Flying Club the flying is completed on a PA34-200 Piper Seneca I.

What's involved?

Clearly defined exercises cover aircraft familiarisation, climbing, descending, turning, slow flight, minimum control speed, stalling, engine shut downs, asymmetric flight and circuits.

Are there any exams?

Yes, one exam of the 'multi-choice' type, produced and marked at Southend.

Preparation is by arranged Groundschool and self-study

Plus a flying Skills Test and a oral test of your knowledge of the aircraft that you fly.

Age limits

No age limits apply to fly, however 14 is the lower limit for instructional flying. A minimum age of 16 years applies to solo flying and 17 years to holding a licence.

Medical requirements

A medical certificate is required before flying solo. Validity periods are dependant on age, i.e. Up to 30 every 5 years, 30-49 every 2 years, 50-64 every year, and six-monthly thereafter. Your appointment should be made directly with the doctor, (ask for a class 2 pilot's medical). It is advisable to book several weeks in advance.

Authorised medical examiners are listed on the CAA web page CAA Medical Examiner search

Weather restrictions

Good visibility is important, especially in the early stages. Low cloud and strong winds can sometimes restrict operations. You are advised to 'phone us before setting out for the airfield to check the conditions.

How long will it take?

This necessarily is governed by aptitude, personal commitments, weather, and of course funds.

How much will it cost?

Course price and aircraft hire rates are available on request.

After you obtain your Multi Rating

Once qualified, you may hire the Club's aircraft and carry passengers (although not for profit). Cost sharing however is permissible, providing the pilot pays at least an equal proportion.

Maintaining your licence privileges

Your class rating will be valid for 12 months renewable by flying proficiency check with one of our many examiners within the last three months of your experience.

There are few restrictions on where you can take a light aircraft, trips to the continent are popular, or if touring is not your scene, then there's still the pleasure of flying locally. Once qualified you will find it beneficial to add further ratings to your licence.
