Revalidating or Renewing Ratings
Revalidation or Renewal?
If you refresh your rating/certificate privileges within the validity period this is known as revalidation. If you rating expires you will need to follow a different renewal process.
Single Engine (SEP)
Your licence will be valid for life, but your flying privileges need to be revalidated every two years. This is done in either one of two ways:
The simplest is to have a Proficiency Check with one of our many examiners within the last three months of your experience. This is a flight test of your general handling skills and will normally last about one hour.
Otherwise revalidating is done with flying experience. You will require in the last 12 months of your validity period, 12 hours of flying. These 12 hours will need to be a minimum of 6 hours as pilot in command, there will need to be logbook evidence of 12 take-offs and 12 landings and there must also be a signed off dual flight with an instructor of at least one hour.
Renewal is by way of Proficiency check with an examiner.
Instrument Meteorological Rating (IMC)
Your IMC rating is valid for 25 months and is revalidated or renewed by test with an authorised examiner.
Flying Instructor Rating
The FI Rating is valid for 3 years. Revalidation is done by completing two of the following three options:
Complete an assessment of competence with an examiner
Complete 50 instructional flying hours.
Attend an approved refresher course.
Renewal is done by way of points 1 & 3 above.
We have a resident Flight Instructor Examiner (FIE) who can carry out your assessment of competence (AOC) either with us or at your local airfield.
